Charity at King Edward VI Handsworth School for Girls

Fund raising for charities is an integral part of the school year. We support a range of good causes, some year on year, others as a result of student nominations which are then discussed and decided by representatives from the school council. While many of the fund-raising events follow the traditional non-uniform route, we also have themed dress up days, Christmas jumper days and school wide cake sales – often with contributions for vegan and gluten free diets.

In a normal year our biggest event revolves around the BBC Children in Need campaign. The week comprises of a series of form organised fund raising activities, from male teacher leg waxing, to photobooths, cake sales and raffles. The week culminates in the Miss King Edward VI Handsworth (Miss KE) competition where one pupil from each form creates a themed outfit and performs a talent ranging from singing to dance to hula-hooping and is judged by a panel of teachers. All this is mixed in with loud music and lots of cheering your own form. The event is entirely organised by a group of year 11 pupils.

We also have our own Race for Life in the summer to support Cancer Research UK and specifically breast cancer. With a mile long route marked on the field the emphasis is on having fun, enjoying the music and hopefully the warm weather.
