WELCOME

TO KING EDWARD VI HANDSWORTH
SCHOOL FOR GIRLS

King Edward VI Handsworth School for Girls is an Academy and member of the King Edward VI Academy Trust Birmingham and the King Edward VI Foundation. The school has been situated in Rose Hill Road, Handsworth since 1911. An extensive programme of building work has been carried out in recent years, including new DT and teaching facilities, a new library, science block and sports hall. We have created both a pastoral and a learning hub to support the emotional health and wellbeing of our students. The school boasts a large site with excellent facilities, we are also fortunate to have a large playing field for sporting activities and for students to enjoy during the summer months. King Edward VI Handsworth School for Girls may be steeped in tradition and history, something of which we are fiercely proud, but we are a forward-thinking and outward-facing school committed to preparing our students face and meet the challenges of a fast-paced and ever-changing world.

A message from THE HEADMISTRESS

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the website for King Edward VI Handsworth School for Girls.

My aim at Handsworth is to lead an inclusive school where our students are able to flourish academically and socially and be part of a rich, vibrant and diverse community where active participation is encouraged. We believe that education can transform lives and our school aims to inspire the students to be curious learners, who are confident to think creatively, underpinned by values of honesty, integrity and a sense of social justice.

We are a warm, caring, safe and supportive school which values praise, enjoyment, respect and integrity in all we do. A rich programme of extra curricular provision provides chances for the students to develop outside of the classroom, particularly in terms of resilience, teamwork and leadership.

Of fundamental importance to us is the wellbeing of all who work and learn with us.  Our pastoral care and SEND department seeks to provide care, nurture and guidance to help our students navigate the challenges of growing up in our fast paced, complex world.  Our school is not just about achieving examination results; alongside academic excellence we aim to develop young people who leave the school with a secure sense of identity and respect for and understanding of difference and diversity and as well rounded, confident young people who are ready and able to embrace the challenges and opportunities of adult life.   We also retain the best staff by looking after their wellbeing and developing them professionally.

We keep the main thing the main thing.  Teaching and Learning and safeguarding are the main things and are of paramount importance.  The Handsworth Teaching and Learning Framework is evident in everything we do here and we actively encourage students to develop growth mindsets as they learn with us.

Our website can only give a flavour of the school. We would encourage any of you who are considering applying for a place for your child to come and visit us at one of our many open events.

A message from THE CHAIR OF GOVERNORS

Thank you for your interest in our School.   Since 1883, and on this splendid site since 1911, our School has been educating generations of able girls to take their place as movers and shapers in Birmingham and beyond. Always conscious of our roots, history and traditions, we are a forward looking School, which strives in every way to prepare our students for the many challenges and opportunities facing them in the twenty-first century. Our facilities are first class and all the people who study and work here contribute to the vibrant atmosphere that exists. Do try to visit us and feel this vibrancy at first hand.

I feel proud and privileged to be Chair of Governors of such an exciting institution and I, and my fellow Governors, work hard to enable the School to continue to develop and grow in every way.
