GCSE Art and Design Visit | Newsletter

On Friday 14th June, Year 10 Art GCSE students visited the Lapworth Museum of Geology and Barber Institute of Fine Arts, both located locally as part of Birmingham University.

Pupils were provided with many opportunities to observe art and natural forms and handle precious artefacts such as ammonites, the skull of a sabre tooth cat and got to meet their superstar ‘Roary’ the allosaurus.

Pupils produced sketches in their portfolios, documented their experiences using photography and mark making and demonstrated independence through their selection of media, subject matter, materials and techniques.

A thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all and we look forward to seeing how the visit has inspired our students’ developing art work and ideas.

Familiarisation Workshops in the Art Department

The Art department have enjoyed welcoming students from schools within our catchment area to attend workshops in the photographic dark room and to take part in a ‘taster day’ to see what a day at Handsworth is like for our students.  The enthusiasm and enjoyment was excellent and the outcomes were fantastic too!

Success for Isra!

We are delighted to announce that our A level Art student, Isra Kausar has been award with a ‘highly commended’ prize for the Inspire 2019 youth art competition.  The competition is open to young people across the breadth of Birmingham and we are so proud of Isra’s achievement.

The piece is based upon her father which was her reason for entering the competition that has been curated around the theme of ‘Family.’  A print of Isra’s work will be on display at the beautiful Blakesley Hall throughout the Summer yet our pupils can see the real thing on display in our Sixth Form Studio. WELL DONE ISRA!
