Our school King Edward VI Handsworth School for Girls is an Academy and member of the King Edward VI Academy Trust Birmingham and the King Edward VI Foundation. The school has been situated in Rose Hill Road, Handsworth since 1911. An extensive programme of building work has been carried out in recent years, including a new library, science block and sports hall. Most recently we have refurbished our dining room and food technology rooms. We have created both a pastoral and a learning hub to support the emotional health and wellbeing of our students. The school boasts a large site, with a separate gym, sports hall and sixth form centre. We are also fortunate to have a large playing field for sporting activities and for students to enjoy during the summer months. King Edward VI Handsworth School for Girls may be steeped in tradition and history, something of which we are fiercely proud, but we are a forward-thinking and outward-facing school. From this basis, we are able to help our students face and meet the challenges of a fast-paced and ever-changing world. Our excellence in teaching and learning King Edward VI Handsworth School for Girls has a strong and long standing commitment to academic excellence. Our innovative, ambitious and forward thinking teaching and learning encourages students to love learning and to value the many opportunities offered to develop a breadth of knowledge and understanding through a broad and balanced curriculum. Our staff are experts in their areas and passionate about the subject they teach. Staff craft lessons which challenge, engage and motivate students. Our teaching and learning ethos is underpinned by excellent relationships between staff and students, ensuring a climate where students can express their opinions, discuss and question. We aim to create a culture of learning where a range of interests and talents can thrive and prosper. As students develop and progress, they build learning habits which enable them to become more independent and resilient in their learning, ensuring that they ‘know what to do, when they don’t know what to do’. Through these habits, our priority is not only to develop a love of learning but also to equip students for a rapidly changing world. Students are encouraged and expected to take responsibility for their own learning, to ask questions, to get stuck, to solve problems and to take risks with their learning. As a result, lessons at King Edward VI Handsworth for Girls are creative, engaging, thought-provoking and, most importantly, enjoyable.
